Matatabi (Japanese catnip or Actinidia Polygama), is a deciduous climbing vine grown in the high mountainous regions of eastern Asia. Matatabi has long been known to elicit positive responses in cats. This is because it contains not one, but two cat attractant compounds: the first attracts and relaxes, the second has a stimulating, sweet tea-like fragrance. The combined effect is similar to the Catnip response, but appears to be more intense. Many cats who are immune to Catnip will respond positively to Matatabi. Typical behaviors include rolling, chin and cheek rubbing, drooling and licking. The effect usually lasts between five and 30 minutes. When playing, the toy releases essential oils which are spread over the cat’s fur through its movements. The effect usually lasts between five and 30 minutes.
